Adult Autism & ADHD Assessments
Neurodivergent-Affirming Assessments in North Carolina
If you have spent years wondering why life feels harder than it seems to for other people, you are not alone.
Many adults reach a point where they start asking deeper questions about focus, overwhelm, burnout, sensory sensitivity, masking, shutdown, people-pleasing, chronic exhaustion, social difficulty, or the feeling that they have been “working twice as hard” just to get through everyday life. For some, those questions lead to exploring ADHD. For others, autism. For many, it may be both.
At Compassionate Voice Counseling, we now offer neurodivergent-affirming adult ADHD and autism assessments for adults in North Carolina. Our goal is not to force you into a box. Our goal is to help you better understand your brain, your patterns, and your needs with a process that is respectful, thoughtful, and grounded in affirmation rather than shame.
Why adult assessments matter
Many adults were overlooked earlier in life because their struggles did not match the stereotypes people expected to see.
Some people learned to mask. Some were labeled anxious, lazy, dramatic, too sensitive, disorganized, or “high functioning” while quietly struggling underneath. Some did well academically or professionally, but at a very high internal cost. Some were misread because they are women, queer, people with trauma histories, gifted, or people who learned early how to survive by overcompensating. Research and clinical guidance both recognize that adult ADHD and autism can be missed, delayed, or confused with other concerns, and that careful assessment matters.
A good assessment can help you make sense of lifelong patterns, reduce self-blame, and clarify what kinds of support may actually fit.
What “neurodivergent-affirming” means to us
A neurodivergent-affirming assessment does not start from the assumption that something is wrong with you.
It starts from the understanding that neurodivergence is real, that many adults have been misunderstood by systems that were not designed with them in mind, and that evaluation should consider both struggles and strengths. Our assessment approach explicitly centers neurodiversity-affirming services, lived experience, and differential diagnosis, which aligns closely with who we are as clinicians here at Compassionate Voice.
For us, that means we aim to:
- listen for the full picture rather than stereotypes
- consider masking, burnout, sensory experiences, executive functioning, and lifelong patterns
- look carefully at overlap with trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, and other diagnoses
- respect the ways identity, oppression, and survival strategies can affect how neurodivergence shows up
- offer a process that feels collaborative, humane, and useful
Why people seek these assessments
You might be looking for an ADHD or autism assessment because:
- you have wondered for years if you were missed
- you are burned out and beginning to realize it may not be “just stress”
- therapy has helped, but you still feel like something foundational has gone unnamed
- you want clarity for work, relationships, self-understanding, or accommodations
- your child, partner, or friends were identified and you are seeing yourself differently
- you have been given other diagnoses before, but they never fully explained the whole picture
- menopause or perimenopause hormonal changes are causing you to wonder what symptoms may be neurodivergence
Our approach
Our assessment process is designed for adults and informed by current neurodiversity-affirming training. We are building this service with specific education in ADHD and autism evaluation that emphasizes diagnostic clarity, differential diagnosis, appropriate screening tools, and ethical scope of practice.
We want this process to be:
Thorough
We look beyond a quick checklist and consider your history, current functioning, patterns across environments, and the broader context of your life.
Respectful
You deserve an evaluation experience that does not talk down to you or treat your coping strategies like character flaws.
Practical
The goal is not just a label. The goal is insight, clarity, and meaningful next steps.
Affirming
We recognize that many neurodivergent adults have spent years internalizing shame. Our process is designed to reduce that shame, not deepen it.
What an assessment may include
Depending on fit and clinical need, the assessment process may include:
- a detailed clinical interview
- screening and assessment measures related to ADHD, autism, executive functioning, and related concerns
- exploration of developmental history and lifelong patterns
- consideration of masking, sensory experiences, social patterns, and burnout
- differential diagnosis to help distinguish ADHD and/or autism from trauma-related symptoms, anxiety, depression, and other overlapping concerns
Assessment and careful diagnosis for adults, rather than relying on assumptions or surface impressions.
Who this is for
These assessments may be a good fit for adults who:
- suspect they may have ADHD
- suspect they may be autistic
- suspect they may be both autistic and ADHD
- have felt chronically overwhelmed, different, or misunderstood
- want greater clarity before pursuing accommodations or other supports
- want a more affirming and nuanced process than they have experienced elsewhere
Why this matters
Receiving clarity in adulthood can be deeply emotional.
For many people, it brings grief for what was missed. Relief that there is a reason things have felt so hard. Compassion for younger versions of themselves. And hope that life can become more workable with the right understanding and support.
An affirming mental health environment also matters. Identity-affirming mental health care is associated with better mental health outcomes than non-affirming care among neurodivergent clients.
A note about fit
Not every concern requires this type of assessment, and not every person needs the exact same process. We will talk with you about fit, scope, and whether this service is appropriate for your needs. If a different type of evaluation or referral would better serve you, we want to help point you in the right direction.
