Brainspotting
Brainspotting Therapist for Trauma, Anxiety, and Somatic Healing
Brainspotting is a powerful body-based therapy that helps people access, process, and release unresolved emotional and physical pain. Many clients find that it helps them move through trauma, anxiety, and chronic stress in ways that traditional talk therapy alone cannot.
At Compassionate Voice Counseling, Brainspotting therapy is offered to clients across North Carolina through secure telehealth sessions. Our work focuses on helping your nervous system process experiences that may still feel “stuck” in the body so you can move toward greater calm, clarity, and resilience.
What Is Brainspotting Therapy?
Brainspotting was developed by Dr. David Grand and is based on the understanding that where we look affects how we feel.
During a Brainspotting session, a therapist helps identify specific eye positions, called “brainspots,” that connect to stored emotional experiences in the deeper, subcortical regions of the brain. These areas hold many of the memories and nervous system responses related to trauma.
When attention is focused on a brainspot while the body remains supported and regulated, the brain can begin to process and release unresolved material in a natural way.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, Brainspotting gently bypasses the analytical mind and works directly with the nervous system. By combining mindful awareness, body sensation, and a safe therapeutic relationship, the process allows trauma and distress to move from being stuck to being integrated and resolved.
How Brainspotting Helps Trauma, Anxiety, and Stress
Clients often describe Brainspotting sessions as deeply calming, emotionally releasing, and surprisingly effective—even when it’s hard to find words. This integrative approach can support:
-
Healing from trauma and PTSD
-
Reducing anxiety, depression, and emotional overwhelm
-
Enhancing focus and performance in work, school, or creative pursuits
-
Addressing somatic symptoms such as chronic pain, headaches, or muscle tension
-
Breaking through stuck patterns that block growth or healing
- Collective trauma and nervous system healing
Because Brainspotting works directly with the nervous system, many people experience profound shifts in a gentle, non-invasive way. The therapy supports your body’s innate capacity to heal, making it effective for both acute and complex trauma.
What Happens During a Brainspotting Session?
A Brainspotting session often begins with identifying a feeling, memory, or body sensation that you would like to explore.
Your therapist will help you notice where the experience shows up in your body and guide your gaze to find a brainspot connected to that experience. Once the brainspot is located, the session becomes a space of mindful observation.
You may notice body sensations, emotions, memories, or shifts in awareness arise and move through your system. The therapist provides support and regulation throughout the process, helping you stay grounded and safe while your nervous system processes what it needs to process.
Many clients report feeling calmer, clearer, or more regulated after sessions, even if the work itself felt subtle.

Who Brainspotting Therapy Is Helpful For
Brainspotting can be especially helpful for people who feel that traditional talk therapy has only taken them so far.
It is often a good fit for:
• adults healing from trauma or difficult life experiences
• people who feel emotions strongly in their body
• highly sensitive or neurodivergent individuals
• professionals experiencing burnout or compassion fatigue
• people who struggle to explain what they feel but know something inside needs attention
Because the approach is flexible and gentle, sessions can be adapted to each person’s comfort level and nervous system capacity.
