Madelyn Smith, LCSWA
Trauma Therapist & Brainspotting Practitioner in North Carolina
At some point, you may have been told you were “too sensitive,” “too much,” or “too this or too that.” That came at a cost. You learned to keep the peace, hold it together for everyone else, and make sure others were okay—often abandoning yourself in the process. Now, saying no, expressing anger, or asking for what you need can feel unsafe, tangled with guilt and shame.
As a trauma therapist specializing in Brainspotting and relational healing, I help adults who have spent years holding everything together finally feel safe to let go. Many of my clients are highly sensitive, neurodivergent, or LGBTQIA+ adults who were labeled “too much” or “too emotional.” You may have been the caretaker, the strong one, or the family peacemaker. Therapy with me offers a place to rest that role—to feel seen, understood, and supported without judgment.
You deserve to feel grounded and at ease in your own body. Together, we’ll help you reconnect with your inner sense of safety, develop self-trust, and move toward relationships and routines that feel steady and authentic.
My Approach to Trauma Therapy
I believe there is nothing wrong with you. The patterns you carry are powerful survival strategies that once kept you safe. In our work together, we’ll honor those parts of you and help them finally put their guard down.
My therapeutic style is warm, humble, and non-pathologizing. I use a blend of experiential and evidence-based methods such as:
-
Brainspotting therapy for trauma, anxiety, and emotional regulation
-
Coherence Therapy to help the nervous system release learned protective patterns
-
Parts Work / Internal Family Systems (IFS-informed) to reconnect you with your inner wisdom
Therapy sessions are collaborative and paced with your nervous system in mind. We’ll slow down, listen to what your body already knows, and create room for humor, curiosity, and compassion along the way.
Who I Work With
I specialize in supporting:
-
Adults healing from childhood trauma and emotionally immature parents
-
Cycle-breakers and caregivers who struggle to rest or prioritize themselves
-
Neurodivergent and highly sensitive individuals managing overwhelm and perfectionism
-
LGBTQIA+ clients seeking an affirming, inclusive space for self-discovery
-
Helping professionals, educators, and healthcare workers facing burnout and compassion fatigue
If you’re ready to feel more grounded, confident, and connected, I’d be honored to walk alongside you.
About Me
I’m neurodivergent, a cisgender woman (she/her), a mother to both humans and dogs, a bluegrass music lover, and a self-proclaimed reality TV expert. I know what it’s like to feel both “too much” and “not enough” at the same time. In therapy, all of your “too muchness” is welcome and safe here.
